Modern-day view of the remnant of the original Valley Pike looking south toward Fisherâs Hill. Troops from Colonel Edward Molineuxâs command passed through this area during their advance. Photograph by author.
Sheridanâs behavior bothered Molineux to such an extent that, the day after the battle, he went to General Emory and said he wished to resign his commission so that he could âfight Sheridan [in] a duel for insultingâ him. Emory intervened on Molineuxâs behalf and informed Sheridan: âYou have insulted one of the best men in my corps. If I had told him to go to hell, heâd have gone.â Moved by Emoryâs comments, Sheridan offered Molineux a public apology. Molineux remembered of Sheridanâs apology: ââI had no intention of insulting you. I apologize.â Then he called the company on guard and his staff officers around him and told me he wished to apologize to me for what he had said.â In Molineuxâs estimation, Sheridanâs public apology was âthe bravest thing Sheridan ever did.â214
In retrospect, the momentary halt of Groverâs division against the eastern flank of Earlyâs line mattered little. By the time Emoryâs troops reached the base of Fisherâs Hill and the stone bridge that carried the Valley Pike across Tumbling Run, Gordonâs troops and the Confederate artillery had ceased firing and taken to their heels in retreat, as troops from Crookâs corps had swept in behind Gordonâs position. As infantry from Emoryâs corps peered to the top of Fisherâs Hill, âthose unattainable heights,â they spied a color-bearer from one of Crookâs regiments. A veteran of the Fourteenth New Hampshire, one of Groverâs regiments, recalled that one of Crookâs veterans was âwaving that resplendent banner with thirty-four stars upon it, signaling to a triumphant army, that, while it was marching up to death in front, victory had been won in the rear.â215
